"Just a few minutes ago you were telling me the past wasn't important."
"In this particular case it is. If I'm ever going to make this up to him, I have to find a way to bridge the gap, fill in the space between the now and the then. You see, Theodore, I couldn't come back until I found a way to eliminate the chasm between life and death, because that empty space is the erosion of everything that I am and still have the potential to become."
Theodore looked at his brother in the falling light, too stunned to say anything. Charlie had truly changed, far more than he would have ever thought possible. The way he looked, the way he talkedit was their father reincarnated. He had to force himself to repeat the question. "You still haven't told me what's in the jar."
Charlie managed another practiced smile. "I'm not sure I can."
"Try me."
"Have you ever been to Newfoundland?"
